Vesna Todorović: How to publish in Nature communications

Publishing the results of your research is essential to promote your career and plays a critical role in acquiring research funding. The pressure on researchers to publish in high impact journals is tremendous, but only a small fraction of submissions makes it through the process. The goal of my presentation is to demystify the editorial process at Nature Communications and its sister journals to help you get your research published more efficiently.

10.30 - 12.30

Chapin Rodriguez: Communicating your research effectively orally and in writing

I will describe how the traditional ways of communicating research are no longer the "industry standard" and present examples and strategies for explaining and justifying your research in ways more likely to leave an impression on international audiences and journals.

Željko Bihar: Patents in everyday engineering practice

Patents play a significant role in shaping science, industry and everyday life. Standard engineering practice in each field should comprise sufficient knowledge of principles and limitations of the patent system. The scope of protection given by the patents is important for research and business decisions and forecasting. Classification, as the most important tool for monitoring who-is-doing-what, will be revealed through examples. The basic idea of patent examination/evaluation and one example from the life science will be demonstrated.

14.30 - 15.30

Hrvoje Meštrić: Possibilities for the R&D and innovation public financing in Croatia within EU

Public resources for financing innovation and R&D activities in Croatia, although scarce in the past, are going to increase with entering Croatia in EU. Several public agencies and government bodies are opening new programs and instruments for supporting R&D projects and infrastructure. How this new palette of financial measures is going to increase overall R&D performance in Croatia and how easy can you find find the way for setting up you own innovation agenda?
